JBSA Fort Sam Houston FamCamp — San Antonio, Texas
Temps: 67F (19C) / 59F (14C)
Woke up to overcast skies and cool temps. But the weather guy had promised sunshine, so we planned accordingly. After breakfast, we set off for JBSA [Joint Base San Antonio] Lackland to pick up prescriptions before continuing with our sightseeing plans. Surely the sun would make an appearance by the time we finished our errands.
Nope — the sun was going to remain in hiding, and a wicked wind was going to keep the air chilled. Nonetheless, we decided to get some of our daily steps in while my ℞ was being filled. What better place to do so than at the Parade Field, rimmed with aircraft for our viewing pleasure. So, off we went. We were out for exercise … stopped only a few times for photos of some of the planes that had been behind a maintenance barrier the last time we were here.

The P-51 Mustang was originally designed in 1940 at Britain’s request.
The B-17 “Flying Fortress” is one of the most well known airplanes in history.
A-26 “Invader” … made its first flight in 1942.
Versatile Lady … an example of Military Nose Art.
Disaster struck about a quarter of the way into our first lap around the field. Actually, disaster is too strong of a word for what happened, but it felt like it at the time. Long story short — I took a tumble when my foot stepped off the slightly raised paved pathway. No serious injury … but I was shaken. My right pinkie took the brunt of the fall. It hurt like the dickens and was black and blue by later in the afternoon. I pulled some muscles and scraped the side of my right wrist as well. No broken bones, thank goodness. But I am going to be achy for a couple of days I’m sure.
Once I regained my composure, I soldiered on and even did a second loop around the Parade Field … I was bound and determined to get the steps in. No longer in sightseeing-mode, we scrapped our plans to go to the museums at Lackland. Instead, we stopped off at the Exchange complex to get haircuts. Darn it! Why won’t hairdressers listen to their customers when we say TRIM, DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LENGTH!!!!!! GRRRRR!!!! Now I have to start all over to regain some of the length I so patiently grew out.
We wrapped up the day with a few errands. The forecast for tomorrow isn’t looking good, so just might skip sightseeing another day and rest up from today’s tumble.

You'll hurt more before you start feeling better, hope you're feeling better soon. We're not getting our steps in regularly since we got to Durango, cold and windy here. My hair is lucky if it sees a salon once a year and then it's usually a beauty school. Next summer I see the young lady who had been cutting it for 15 years.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear it wasn't serious. I was worried although not toooo much since you used the word tumble. Were you aiming for 10K?? Steps that is? I really hear you about getting a haircut and having them pay absolutely no attention to what you ask for. That's one of the hardest things on the road IMO, trying to figure out where you might possibly get a decent haircut.
ReplyDeleteYour disaster reminded me of when I tumbled on the pavement not on a trail! My knee then got the brunt and was hurting and not hiking for a month. But glad your disaster was nothing just a bruised ego :)
ReplyDeleteI can only count on my fingers ladies that can cut/trim/color my hair the way I wanted it.
Looks like a nice place to get in some exercise. Sorry about your ankle. Those sidewalk edges are the worst. I can't tell you how many times I've stepped wrong on a hike and bent my ankle sideways. I must have strong ankles because they do bruise and swell but I just tighten the boots and keep going. But not stopping was the smartest thing you did. I've found by continuing I recover much better. I think if you stop and sit, the swelling just balloons. Hope it isn't too bad at this point. But you will be reminded every time you bend it a little for awhile:)
ReplyDeleteGlad it wasn't serious. I took a tumble in downtown Eugene when I missed the raised sidewalk and twisted my ankle. Nothing serious, just sore for days and swollen. Thankfully I held on to Gidget and she didn't get hurt when I landed on her.
