A decent night’s rest at the “Cummins Parking Lot Campground” — only slightly bothered by the occasional train going by, tooting its horn … and a rhythmic beeping that turned out to be from the failing smoke detector in the neighboring coach.  Nonetheless, we were up at 6:30a … keys turned into the service desk at Cummins Coach Care shortly after 7:30a.

The two recliners in the customer lounge were waiting for us with open arms … we lost no time making ourselves comfortable for the duration.

Welcome to the Cummins Coach Care Customer Lounge.
The Cummins mantra is stenciled on the wall at the far end …
”I am Cummins.  You can depend on me.”  And so we do.

The room has been renovated a bit with new furniture since we were last here.  It’s a nice place to wait while the Phaeton has her annual exam.  Our only complaint — as the day wears on, the A/C kicks into high gear.  Next time, I’m going to bring my wool lap blanket with me ;-)  We’ve never had to share the lounge with too many people in the past … today was no exception.  Just one other RV’ing couple joined us later in the morning … they were still there when we got word that our coach was ready to roll shortly after 1:00p.

All the comforts of home … we even brought our breakfast with us.
(This is before the A/C kicked into high gear and I donned my sweater and jacket.)

Woo hoo!  With the Phaeton passing her physical with flying colors, we were on the road by 1:40p … ahead of our self-imposed 2:00p deadline to get out of dodge.  Our biggest concern was getting through Katy before the afternoon rush hour.  Managing to whiz through that hurdle with no traffic to speak of set the tone for the rest of the 197-mile (315 km) drive.

On the Road to San Antonio

Happy Driver behind the wheel!

We pulled into the campground at JBSA [Joint Base San Antonio] Fort Sam Houston right around 5:45p.  The office was already closed, but we’d called ahead from Cummins to add tonight to our reservation, so no worries about being homeless.  Turns out that we landed a really nice site despite our last minute change in plans.  I’ll write more about our pad tomorrow … after I get a chance to take a few photos.

By 6:30p, we were settled into our site.  Time to have fun.  We had a dinner date with the Sweets — fellow full-timers and friends from our RTW adventure last year.  We last saw them a month ago when we came to San Antonio for a quick getaway.  They’re heading east for their summer work-camping gig, so this will be our last chance to see them for a while.  It was a delight to share a meal with them at Bok Choy, an Asian restaurant not far from Fort Sam.

The drive from Houston to San Antonio is an easy one.  But our day started early, so we’re exhausted.  Mui has already called it a night. I’ll be following suit as soon as I click the post button.

We’re going to be in San Antonio until Monday … do a bit of provisioning at the commissary … see some sights … meet up with friends who live in San Antonio.  And of course, relax and enjoy our beautiful site when time permits.

  2. For this non Texan, what it Katy? Nice to see everything working properly with Phae, and of course visiting friends should be great fun. Looking forward to hearing more about the FamCamp. Enjoy relaxing a bit. Isn't that frustrating when it is so hot outside and freezing inside? I didn't like that part about Florida at all when I was there one time in May. Needed sweaters to go anywhere

    1. Katy is a city west of Houston ... notoriously bad rush hour traffic. It is great not to have to deal with any unexpected maintenance issues. This is one of the best famcamps IMHO ... huge sites, lots of green space between the sites. Yeah, there are trains going by, tooting their horns, but it doesn’t bother us.

  4. Sounds like a nearly perfect day. Clean bill of health, nice site, good friends. Sure wish we had a great place for service like that on or near the east coast where Winnona could go. Unfortunately for her she's neither Cummins nor Freightliner.
