Gulf Waters RV Resort — Port Aransas, Texas

Welcome to a virtual tour of our RV pad — Site 408 at Gulf Waters RV Resort.

As mentioned in the previous post, after dithering around for four months, we took the plunge and bought ourselves an RV pad here in Port Aransas, Texas.  We signed the paperwork a week ago, on 25 April; and moved over from the rental site when our renters left two days later.  Although we plan to live on the site for a while before making any changes to the existing layout, Mui’s already hard at work on some minor projects — which I will share in future posts.

A few of our readers commented that they were surprised we bought a pad so soon into our RVing lifestyle.  Truth be told, we were too.  But we really fell in love with this place.  That was one reason we bought at GWRVR.  Another reason … as many of you know, we mingle our RV travels with off-the-road trips that take us to destinations our motorhome can’t get to — at least not easily.  These trips tend to be rather active, and we need a place to take a breather for a while when we return to our home on wheels.  An important consideration also was the easy beach access from the resort — makes it more feasible for us to spend the summer here if our travel plans so dictate.  Having our medical care set up in nearby Corpus Christi … having a military base just a short distance away … well, all the more reason, we figured, to base ourselves in Port Aransas when we’re not traveling — with or without the Phaeton.  Anyway, that’s the story behind the purchase and we’re sticking to it :-)

From #408’s front yard pond … don’t have to leave our pad to enjoy the wildlife.
Clockwise from top Left: Great Blue Heron; Painted Bunting; Turtle; Little Blue Heron;
Common Yellowthroat; Great Blue Heron (times two … the reflection counts, too).

First off, for those who are not familiar with Texas — let alone, Port Aransas — a map to get you oriented to where GWRVR is located.

Gulf Waters RV resort is on Mustang Island, a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Texas.

There are four ponds of varying sizes on the property.  Since our arrival in December we’ve rotated between sites on or near the pond closest to the beach.  Our home pad, however, is on a pond that is further inland.  No big deal — instead of a two-minute walk to the beach access, we have to walk four minutes ;-)  The pad is angled so that the hot afternoon sun is on the utilities side of the site, leaving our patio living space in a reasonable amount of shade — that’s a good thing.

Site 408, marked with a thick black border = our pad.
Yellow dots = the sites we rented during the first four months at GWRVR.

OK … so on with the photos.  (Click any of the images for a larger version if interested.)

First, a few pics I took before we moved in …

Looking across the pond from Site 307; our site is the one with the light brown storage shed.

Looking across the pond from Site 204; ours is the site to the right of the white Class C.

From the road behind our site; the photo on the right shows the toad parking as well.

From the pond that fronts the site.

Now let’s get the Phaeton on the site.

From across the pond, with our first visitor — the pond’s resident Great Blue Heron, stopping by to welcome us to site 408 …

… around the site …

From the toad parking area; there’s plenty of room for our trikes as well as the car.

Dining and outdoor cooking area — with and without the hibiscus hedge …

… and from a different angle.

Plenty of room to sit in front of and alongside the Phaeton.

One of the things we’re really pleased with about this pad is all the
patio area we have … and, of course, the storage shed is great, too.

And with permission from the Z’s, I’ll break the news that they also bought a pad at GWRVR.

414 — the Z’s site — and our 408 are both on the same pond!

The plan — at least for the time being — is to keep our pad in the rental pool when we are not using it.  The Z’s are following suit.  Making the sites available to renters is a good thing for us … as well as the resort!

We hoped to christen our site with dinner on the patio a few days ago, but the weather didn’t cooperate.  Not that it stopped us from enjoying the company of the Zs … we just moved the party inside.  We’re hoping nice weather this weekend will give us a chance to enjoy an al fresco meal together before they leave on Sunday.

  1. Very nice! That is a beautiful spot. So happy for you! Having a lot is a good thing and having a spot to take a breath from the road is really good! Can't wait to see the improvements. PS...We have the same table. Perfect for outdoor dining.

    1. Concrete table and bench is good ... especially since there will be renters on the site.

    1. Luckily, not us ;-)) Actually, there are work campers and a landscaping company that take care of the plants, bushes, and the mowing. Of course, if Mui wants to dabble in some gardening, he can do so, too ... but since we won't be here fulltime, it's best that we have a low-maintenance pad.

  3. Having had the pleasure of visiting you at this lovely park, I am thrilled to see that you have a place to "be" in the midst of your travels. After high adventure, there is nothing quite like settling into home to rest and recuperate, a place where you are familiar with where stuff is in the food aisles at the local grocery, where you can get to the doctor when needed. You have the additional advantage of no yard work to speak of, but enough little fixits to keep Mui happy, and a beach to keep everyone happy. Your Phaeton is as comfortable and roomy as many condos I have seen, and a lot less generic! It is the best of everything for you I think, full timing with the pleasure of home. I am just so very happy for you. Now I hope I can get Mo back to Texas for some beach and birding time again someday. You and the Z's are so well matched in tastes and lifestyle, what an amazing thing to find that kind of friendship at this stage of life. I love all the different photo angles of the lot!!

    1. Decent space to back out ... though it's a two step process. After the first time maneuvering in and out, and learning the angles, it's a piece of cake ... and if we want to, we can also ask one of the workcampers to spot us.

    1. Unfortunately the light was very dim, so it's not a good photo of this very beautiful bird ... hoping to get a better one at some point.

  6. Welcome to the Gulf Waters family, nice you didn't get one of the birdhouse sheds. See you there next winter.

  7. Looks like a really nice park. Personally, I'd much prefer being off the beach side and on the pond.

    1. Even on the beach side, there are huge sand dunes separating GWRVR from the actual beach ... so any sites that are on the water are on one of the four ponds.

  9. Look at all that roomy goodness, and that huge little building! My, my ... Didn't you guys get a groovy pad !!
Thrilled about our current neighborly living arrangements, but we'll have to eventually get on spa food and restrict happy hour or some Missy will need all new jeans.
Isn't Sue a Wise-Woman? She hit it spot on :))

  11. This seems just perfect for you and what a beautiful spot in a great area. How wonderful to have found such kindred spirits that you all decided to become neighbors. It sounds divine for sure. And you get to have the Duke practically in your back yard. What more could you ask for. Congratulations to all of you! Best friends nearly next door is one thing I really miss being on the road. You sure solved that problem.

  12. Congratulations! Can we visit you this winter? Erin, do you have a link to this place to get more info. I am curious if we could rent a site this winter.
Love all the birds especially the Painted Bunting. Those are the same birds I was chasing around in Dauphin Island to get a good shot.

    1. You certainly could visit us here this winter ... except that we are not going to be here. Our off-the-road travels will take us away from late November through pretty close the end of March. So, if you are looking to rent ... well, hint, hint ;-)) All rentals are done through the office --- here's the website.

  13. A four minute walk to the beach? How are you going to be able to stand it? ;c)

At least there are some things at your site for Mui to tinker with so, he can stay out of trouble...

  15. I'm a little behind blog reading so this was sure a surprise. Congratulations on your new lot. It's certainly beautiful and in a wonderful location. It reminds me of Lake Greenwood. We certainly know about getting the urge to buy Rv lots, since we now have one in the Keys and one in the mountains. Can't wait to see your modifications. I agree that it's best to live on the lot a while before doing too much. Your plans may change once you are there.

  16. Bob and I checked out that RV park when we passed through Port Aransas a few years back. We were really impressed - it's a beautiful park, and I can see why you decided to buy there. Congratulations and good luck!
