Big Bend National Park … East Side … the Chisos Mountains Basin and More

The previous post covered the first three days of our visit to Big Bend National Park (BBNP).  Now for the story of exploring the Chisos Mountains Basin (and more) here on the east side of the park.

10 February — Balanced Rock & Chisos Mountains Basin

BBNP is big … very big … 800,000+ acres (324,000+ hectares) big.  Ideally, we would have moved to the Chisos Basin Campground to explore the basin and mountains, but the road to this campground is limited to RV’s no more than 24 feet in length — we don’t qualify.

So, we stayed put at the Rio Grande RV Campground, and drove the 30 miles (48 km) or so to explore the Chisos … with a few other stops en route.

From Land to Space to Sea: Three Weeks in Review

When we left Galveston Island State Park on the 9th, we anticipated being in Dickinson, a city within Houston, for two weeks.

Wait a minute … I take that back.  We planned to be in Dickinson one week, and leaving the motorhome behind at the campground while we did a Caribbean cruise out of the Port of Houston during the second week.

That’s not how things turned out, however.  We ended up extending our Dickinson stay another week by stealing time away from the stop we planned in San Antonio.  Why?  That’s part of the story I will cover in this blog post to catch up with the present day.

I’ll do a review of our stay in Dickinson, Texas before we leave at the end of the month.  For now, a teaser to explain why we chose to stay where we did and what we did while here.
