This evening we joined an old friend for an early dinner in DC. Dan was the ship’s doctor on our 2007 Antarctic expedition voyage aboard the 1,750 GRT Professor Molchanov. Yes, an awfully small ship to be traveling on through some of the roughest waters in the world. No, we did not need to avail ourselves of Dr. Dan’s services ;-)
“I was never very good with bones,” quips Dr. Dan as he holds up a penguin
carcass for closer inspection.

When Dan sent us a message that he and his wife, Louise, were going to be in DC to attend an Arctic Collaborative Workshop, we jumped at the chance to renew our friendship and meet Louise. The venue of choice: Zaytinya, which serves a meze menu — think tapas-sized dishes — inspired by Turkish, Greek, and Lebanese cuisine. Yummmm!
Zaytinya means olive oil in Turkish — although we spell it “zeytinyağ."
RVers often comment on how meeting a fellow RVer/blogger is like meeting an old friend. Our dinner with Dan and Louise was no different. Common interests — like food, travel, and the polar regions — eased us into immediate, and smooth flowing conversation.
Good thing Dan had the forethought to bring his camera; otherwise, we would not have pictures with which to remember our fun evening together. Thanks for a great evening, Dan and Louise. We’ll see you when we roll into your neck of the woods in our condo on wheels.
you all clean up very nicely!!..glad you had fun with your 'new/old friends!!..the food looked delicious!!
ReplyDeleteThe restaurant sounds so interesting. We have never visited this type of restaurant. Thanks for sharing and glad you had a great time renewing a friendship. ~wheresweaver
ReplyDeleteHow in the world did Dan ever get into being a doctor that goes to the Antarctic?
ReplyDeleteWhat nice pictures of all of you and the food. That's an especially good picture of you and Mui. How fun for you to meet these friends.
ReplyDeleteSounds like my kind of food! Isn't it fun meeting old friends in our travels? These days there's really no excuse for not staying in touch, is there?
ReplyDeleteI do hope to get back to DC someday and go to some of the places you have written about in the last few years. I really wish I had known you when I was there in 2009. I could have been one of those "meet and greet your fellow bloggers" person. and.... Turkish tapas! wow, what a treat
ReplyDeleteYummy looking food - doubt if it's vegan though. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat ARE you going to do with all those nice suits and ties when you are fulltiming???
You are a beautiful couple. Enjoy those fancy clothes now because you won't need them on the road. :c)
ReplyDeleteHi Mui and Erin, You two are living life largely--and with fun. "If you aren't having fun, you aren't doing it right"--thanks for a good quote, Mui. You two are doing it right, and will inspire us to greater heights in the art of having fun in life. Keep the 'Fun-o-meter' readings at full tilt! Happy Trails from Louise and Dan
ReplyDeleteDr. Dan excludes orthopedics from his practice armamentarium, surely ;)
ReplyDeleteLovely evening!
