Cold & Rainy-ish in Prescott

Point of Rocks RV Campground — Prescott, Arizona
Temps: 50F (10C) /38F (3C)

Brrrr … cold morning … cold-ish day.  Had a bit of blue sky first thing, but overcast with on-and-off drizzle was the rule of the day.  So, we stayed home to take care of chores.  Just because we’re on a road trip, the routines of “life” don’t stop for fulltimers like us.  This was a good day to take care of such things while we waited for the sun to peek out and the day to dry out so we could go for a walk.

Mui goes on the roof to get the rainwater off the slide toppers … and while he’s at it, he takes a rooftop panorama.  Those solar panels will help us to boondock for a night next week.

I have yet to write about our little pad here, so this is a good time to do so.  We’ve been enjoying our stay at PoR RVC.  Site 76 — upper loop; 50A-FHU; fairly level; back-in — is a spacious corner spot … across from the bathhouse.  It’s one of the few that can comfortably accommodate a big rig.  On the driver’s side are bushes, with no other sites beyond.  The patio side overlooks the road that loops around to the other sites … most of which look to have good privacy as well … though not all are level.  Those sites tend to get more shade.  Because of our orientation, and lack of shade trees, we have the sun on the patio most of the day … the gusty breezes have been keeping our awning tucked in more often than not.  But the sun is not a bad thing this time of the year and allowed us to sit out even when it would have been otherwise too chilly to do so.

Don’t let this blue sky fool you … I took this panorama a few days ago.

The sites are dirt … the roads are dirt … there’s lots of dust in the air … especially when the winds are a-blowin’.  That is the downside of being at this campground.  With one of the many wi-fi repeaters adjacent to our site, we have good internet to supplement our strong T-Mobile signal.  The line-of-sight for our rooftop satellite dish is good … not the case at every site … no cable, but some over-the-air antenna channels.  Easy access to Lake Watson for hiking is a plus.  Convenience to Prescott for shopping … another bonus.  We’d definitely stay here again.

There’s the PoR wi-fi repeater that supplements our T-Mobile data here.

So back to the day’s story.

It was late in the day when the sun finally looked like it was going to dry out the drizzle.  That impression didn’t hold true, but by then we were bundled up and already out walking, so we just kept going.

There is a second trail that leads out of the campground.  The manager had told me that it didn’t go down to the lake, but there were some nice views to be had from the top of the granite boulders.  So we headed that way.  We found the blue trail dots and followed them to the left.  I guess we should have gone to the right as we ended up not in the granite dells, but at a trailer park of sorts.  So, we regrouped.  Following a dirt path along Hwy 89A, we walked to the roundabout to access Watson Park instead.

With the drizzle picking up by this time, we scrapped our plan to hike around the boulders.  Heading down Hillsdale Road, we walked to the boat ramp.  Except for some geese, not a soul stirred.

We could have just sat at the picnic table overlooking the lake, but no … that was too tame.  Taking advantage of a break in the drizzle, we scrambled up onto the butte that sits just off the shoreline … accessible from the beach where we watched kayakers putting in the other day.  Nice views from our perch … even on an overcast day.

Let’s go climb that butte for a different perspective of the lake.

When the drizzle turned into a steady rain, we figured it was time to head home.  We scrambled off the butte, this time taking the path we knew would lead us back to the campground … and to a hot meal.

  1. Love the welcoming committee to such a really lovely spot. Beautiful rock formations. You certainly are making the best of bad weather. Don't envy you the winds and dirt though. I'm seriously tired of the winds here on the Outer Banks.

  2. I'll agree with Sherry, that welcoming committee shot was incredibly charming. And the foot photo...sometimes that is the best way to prove it.
