Wrapping Up Our Port A Stay

Gulf Waters RV Resort — Port Aransas, Texas
Temps: Hi 87F (31C) / Lo 79F (26C)

Gulf Waters RV ResortWe’ve been at our Port A pad since March 24. Today is our last day here, so I thought I’d do a quickie post.

As I anticipated at the time of our departure from Houston, we have not done anything exciting or noteworthy.

That’s not to say we haven’t been busy.  We have.  But everything I did was in preparation for our overseas travels.  And everything Mui did was related to the maintenance of our home on wheels …. inside and out.  While he was at it, he also made sure we didn’t go hungry.

It’s been an incredibly hot spring and summer … more so than what we’ve experienced in the course of previous stays in Port A during similar time frames in past years.  If you were to look at the forecasted high temp for today, you might think, “What’s the big deal?”  But that forecast does not reflect the “feels like” temperature when you consider the relative humidity values.  At 9:30a, as I write this post, the thermometer reads 82F, but the “feels like” temp is more like 94F (28C / 34C).  By this afternoon that same “feels like” temperature is expected to be in the range of 105F to 109F (41C to 43C).  That’s hellish by any standard.

Of course, heat is to be expected in this part of Texas.  But on the coast it is usually accompanied by breezes that keep the temps somewhat in abeyance … especially in the shade.  For the most part, it’s been much calmer around here this year, thus reducing our outdoor activities considerably.

Since I don’t have anything exciting to write about, how about I show you a few photographs?  Even the camera took a break these past months, so there aren’t that many to share.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

A ruby-throated hummingbird on his favorite perch during the migration.

Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks

A pair of black-bellied whistling ducks taking a tandem-swim at our pond.

Indigo Bunting

An indigo bunting stops by to check us out during the spring migration.

Sunrise @ from our GWRVR Site

Sunrise colors and reflections … my favorite time of the day.

Snowy Egret

Snowy egret shuffling around the edge of the pond for a tasty tidbit.

Red-Eared Sliders @ Our Pond

‘Necking’ Red-Eared Sliders come out of the water to sunbathe … on a cloudy day.

Gulls Snacking on Corn Cobs

Gulls feasting on corn cobs someone strew all over the beach.

GWRVR Resort - 2016 Flooding

Almost a year to the day, we have flooding at Gulf Waters after seriously heavy rains.  You’d be excused for thinking I am taking this photo from the edge of the pond.  You would be mistaken however … there’s the width of a road and the length of an RV site between me and the pond.

P.S.  We remain feet dry at our site … sure am glad we didn’t build a sunken patio.

GWRVR Resort - 2016 Flooding

I’m sad about the flooding, but love the reflection of the palms on the water.

GWRVR Resort - 2016 Flooding

Within hours of the storm, the skies start clearing.  But It takes a day for the flood waters
to start receding … the transformer that powers the water pump was hit by lightning.

Port Aransas

A blurry smartphone photo of the wildfire that started across the road from GWRVR after
a transformer blow-out around 6:15a on 12 July … the fire department quickly put it out.

Sunrise

On one of the few times I take my iPhone with me to the beach, Mother Nature favors me
with a lovely, serene sunrise … I did say that this is my favorite time of the day, didn’t I?

And that’s a wrap for Port A.  We head out to Houston tomorrow.

  2. When they start using the term "feels like", that's the time we want to hit the road.

  3. Bob and Jo ... those words have been in the weather news way too much this year.

  4. You may not have taken many photos but the ones you did take are fantadtic. The sunrises are the most beautiful I have ever seen. You really picked a good spot there since the flood waters never seem to reach you.

  6. Bu hafta burada aşırı sıcaklar yine başladı; üstüne bir de nem var tabi. Kapı pencere kapalı; biraz pervane, bolca da klima yardımıyla rahatlayabiliyoruz ancak.

  8. Your photos are gorgeous, Erin. I love the Indigo Bunting. When ever we are in Mission in the month of February, they are everywhere.

Actually, we have had the "feels like" temps here in Ohio. It was been a very unusual hot summer.

    I love sunset also.

  9. I love sunsets as well, Marsha, but around where we are, the scenery behind the setting sun is not nearly as pretty, so I tend to focus on sunrises instead.

  11. Your pictures are always amazing, so I don't mind that you didn't have too much to write. I wish I had your photographer's eye, it truly is a gift.

  12. You're off to Europe? With any luck at all (fingers crossed), the places you visit won't be as hot or humid. Whew, your summer so far has been brutal. Hope you have a wonderful trip, wherever you go. I'm kinda partial to the turtles (tergels) ... they're cute.
