Please, Sir, I Want Some More … Shelves (Part II)

Tuesday, 24 July

Part I of the shelves story has to do with the removable Elfa baskets Mui installed in the lavatory cabinets (post here).  The shelves in this post are for the pantry in the kitchen.  In our eternal quest to improve the storage space in the Phaeton, Mui built and installed some adjustable shelves in the cabinet back in April, but I neglected to write about it then.  So, while I continue to blog about our trip to Ecuador’s mainland and the Galapagos on Two to Travel, here’s a quickie post about this project.

Our pantry cabinet came with two shelves, each adjustable.  That’s great if you have a lot of tall stuff to store, but we find that most of what we put in the cabinet is not all that tall.  So, Mui built two extra shelves to make better use of the space.

After taking some measurements, he had the guys at Home Depot custom-cut a few pieces of wood, and bought a couple of strips of trim and a can of stain to match our existing cabinetry.  Then he went to work.

A bit of carpenter’s wood glue to adhere some pressed carpet strips to the shelf.

Some cherry stain for the front trim; took three coats to match the color.

Using an existing shelf as a template, Mui cut out the necessary notches
for the shelves to fit in the cabinet.

More wood glue and a couple of small nails to attach the trim to the shelf.

Et voilà; Can you tell the new shelves from the existing ones?

Yes, I know — the pantry is pitifully bare.  I assure you that will change when we get on the road fulltime.

    1. If he had his druthers, one section of the basement would be his tools; but that's just not going to happen, so he'll need to downsize :-)))

  7. What folly this?!

Whilst Le Kernel du Pop and fragrant teas from exotic lands may grace his fine carpentry, I beseech ye fair cousin, what hast thou wrought?

Ye have obliterated the tall space on the bottom shelf where lies the liquids of imbibment !?
Methinks t'will never do! How whilst thou drown thy sorrows when the poisonous bunch-back'd toads torment thee?
Prithee Madam, get thee to Beauregard for the hour of the Cock’s Tail, lest all go dry and wither.

    1. Didn't obliterate, really -- we'll just move the shelves around as necessary to accommodate any imbibement in the future :-)))

  9. Really great job on the shelves! Wish he was around to help us with making better use of space! I'd hire him out if he was willing. I bought those little plexiglass baskets that hang on command strips by 3M and that helps but sure wish I had shelves instead! It looks so custom!
