Comment Notification … You Don’t Have to Moderate

Thursday, June 21

In a comment on my Spam post, Sherry (of In the Direction of Our Dreams fame) noted:

… I get almost no spam AND blogger doesn't catch any either but I do leave comment moderation on because I love having the comments come in my email. Without those I wouldn't get any email. :-))

Comment moderation doesn’t bother me.  In fact, I have it turned on for posts that are 14 days or older as those seem to be spammed the most often.

That said, if getting comment notifications in email is the only reason bloggers have their moderation turned on, there is another way to do that.  I get ALL of my comments — legitimate and otherwise — sent to my email.  That way, I don’t have to go back to my blog to read them.

If you’d like to have your comments sent to email, here’s what you need to do (using the new Blogger interface):

  • Go to your Dashboard
  • Click Settings from the sidebar
  • Click Mobile and Email
  • Enter your email address where it says Comment Notification Email
  • Click the orange Save Settings button in the top right of the screen

Once you’ve completed the steps, all of your comments will go to your email.  No worries; they’ll be published in your blog too :-)

At this point, if you want to leave moderation on, you can do so.  The email you receive will have the usual options to publish, delete, etc.  If you want to change your moderation settings, however, here’s what you need to do:

  • Click Posts and Comments in the sidebar (still in Settings)
    • Click Never to turn off moderation completely — you’ll have to go to your blog to delete any comments that are not legitimate; or
    • Click Sometimes to moderate comments on older posts and enter a number to specify the time frame (as noted above, I’ve got mine set for 14 days) — you will have links in the email to manage these comments as they won’t be automatically published
  • Click the orange Save Settings button in the top right of the screen

Have fun blogging!

  2. Thanks for the information Erin. I love when I'm in touch with folks who are much more blogger savvy than I am.

  3. Great job! Yes, I love just having the comments post, come to my mailbox and go on with life. I even have it set up so Paul gets them also. Saves me from reading them to him.

  4. Great job of explaining this all too frequently ignored option for Blogger comments. Like you, I have moderation turned off except for comments older than 14 days as that seems to be where I experience the most problems with spam.

  5. Thanks, Erin, for the "easy reading" explanation. Donna and I both get all comments via e-mail, so that way we can respond (as long as they have a return e-mail address shown). I like that I don't have to go back to the blog to see them. I am using my gmail address for comments, but they are all forwarded to my Yahoo email account that I've maintained for years. That way, I only have to check that one account.

Donna manages the blog, and does a good job catching anything in the spam file. Fortunately, we don't see much of that ordinarily, so I guess the Russians aren't very interested in what we're doing normally.

One time we got a couple comments that I wasn't sure about, so I asked Rick, and he confirmed that they were, indeed, spam! Thanks Rick for being an all around good guy!! And thank you, Erin for always being willing to share technical details in a clear and understandable manner. Where would we be without you and Rick?

  6. That is a very helpful post, Erin. I have been getting email notification of my comments as well, and really like it that way, especially when traveling with just my phone. I have noticed an even stranger version of spam lately...I'll get an email comment for someone else's blog that is spam. I have no clue how that happens. A couple of blogs that I follow seem to be the culprits so I have thought about writing to those individuals, but for the time being the delete key works great. Thanks for the reminder to go back and check the spam folder. Since I get email notification I don't often do that.

  7. Did you know that:
The derivative of f at the point x is the best possible approximation to the idea of the slope of f at the point x. It is usually denoted f'(x) or dy/dx. Together with the value of f at x, the derivative of f determines the best linear approximation, or linearization, of f near the point x. This latter property is usually taken as the definition of the derivative ?

Neither did I. Looks like Spam to me! Delete.

We love those whose understand Gobbledygook, and share it with their less comprehending friends :))
