Gulf Waters RV Park — Port Aransas, Texas
Temps: Hi 77F (25C) / Lo 73F (23C)
Not the greatest images of the hummers visiting our site as they migrate through the area, but at least I now know that if I sit outside with my DSLR at the ready, I have a shot at getting some decent photos of ruby-throated hummingbirds. (These images were all taken with a Canon SX50HS.) I just need the sun to come out a bit and the skies to turn blue again.
I questioned whether this was a ruby-throated hummingbird … until I read that under
certain light conditions and from certain angles, the red throat patch can look black.
Ruby-throated hummingbird ... female methinks!
Half asleep and Sitting still on a frond of our Ponytail Palm after grooming
for a while, this little hummer rewards me with a pretty neat shot.
Of course, while I was clicking the shutter for the hummingbirds, I had to capture a few more shots of the Baltimore orioles that continue to visit us. Mui invested in an oriole feeder that they seem to like. The bonus to the new feeder is that the grackles don’t seem to be interested in it.
The orioles are getting used to the new feeder … they especially like that they can drink nectar
from the covered holes and don’t try to use the hummingbird feeder to quench their thirst.
Just love the colors on these Baltimore Orioles … all adult males I believe.
But in this bird frenzy, let’s not forget the resident red-eared sliders that make their home in our pond.
Let’s catch some rays before the sun disappears and it starts to rain again!
We’re supposed to have some sun in the days ahead … plan to go birding with Mary, so keep an eye out for more images of feathered friends coming soon to a blog near you.
Yucky weather here in the 'Hood, but at least the laundry is getting done. Great shots Bird-Lady! I'm expecting many more when we go on safari later in the week. Weather dudes are predicting plenty of sunshine... FINALLY!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love all the photos today, Erin. You out did yourself. Fantastic work.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking of buying an oriole feeder. Glad you included yours in a photo. Enjoy your adventure.
If you put some grape jelly in an empty orange halve, the orioles will really like you.
ReplyDeleteAlready on the list ;-))
DeleteThose are fantastic pictures both of the hummingbirds and the orioles. What great birding right there on your patio!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos! (fantastic patience of the photographer!).... Makes me a bit wistful that maybe I'll be more patient. I haven't used grape jelly yet... bought some a year ago... didn't have the place to use it and Bill used it on his bagels. Such is life....
ReplyDeleteKartpostal gibi olmuş hepsi.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photo, Erin! Love the little guy sleeping on the narrow leaf:) I always enjoy turtles. Glad you are enjoying your little show right out your window:)
ReplyDeleteGood to see that you finally have hummers coming to your feeders! Turtles are very nice to see, as well. Nice to have a bit of the nature channel going on where you can see it whenever you want.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why the grackles don't like the feeder. We have plenty of oranges in Mesa. Maybe I should cut one open and see what comes around.
ReplyDeleteApparently they just needed time to get used to it being around. They can't sit on it, but they've figured out how to push the oranges off the feeder ... darn grackles!
